Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan is a festival where people fly kites. It happens every year on January 14th. We call it Makar Sankranti because that’s when the sun moves into the zodiac sign of Capricorn. “Sankranti” means the sun’s movement from one zodiac sign to another. This festival is old and traditional, marking a day when the length of day and night is the same.
It’s celebrated all over India, but with different names in different states. In Gujarat, it’s known as Uttarayan. I took this photo on the night of January 15th in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. In Ahmedabad, the festival lasts for two days, with January 15th (Vasi Uttarayan for Gujaratis) being more important than January 14th.
During the night, many lanterns called Tukkal are flown, making the sky look bright. I also posted a video of the Tukkal on my YouTube channel.
